The Universe Has Never Taken A Business Course (A dynamic conversation on ‘business vs craft’.)

Last week, I had this random thought.

Not one of those why-are-stilettos-called-stilettos random thoughts. You know, the type that can be answered with a quick internet search. No, it was more serious than that.

I thought to myself…

What happens in my head and in my body, if I look at my business as a ‘craft’ instead of a ‘business’?

Well, both my brain & my body got goosebumps!

Because as much as I love business, I love crafting, creating, and developing concepts & ideas even more.

(When I was little I made go karts for my guinea pigs, formed a secret club called The Inky’s that met in the closet underneath the front stairs, and sewed my dog, Snoopy, a pair of yellow terry cloth shorts so we could be twinsies.)

And I wanted to see if the other ladies in MARK’D Women, my business accelerator & mastermind for ambitious women, felt the same way about ‘crafting their livelihood vs. doing business’. So I posted this question in our Facebook Group:

“Ladies! What happens in your mind if you replace the word ‘business’ with the word ‘craft’?”

Here are some of their responses:

Chris Guillot: “I love it! It makes my community events more inclusive.”

Elsie Escobar: “Yass!”

Jacqueline Fairbrass: “Magical.”

Grace Quantock: “Craft work, craft tasks, craft connections!”

Susan Burns: “Artistry.”

Xandra Robinson-Burns: “A good replacement for the word ‘work’ as well.”

Karen Shue: “It moves my attention from making a living to contributing what I have to give in an elegant way. Love it.”

After experiencing their excitement, I knew we had to have a deeper, more exploratory conversation during our next Weekly Business Whipping.

Well, let’s just say it was a HOT Topic.

Every MARK’D Woman, who participated in this conversation, had something unique to contribute. And because of that, I know it’s time for a new, revolutionary conversation about the way we approach business.

I believe that business should never be boring.

Even sales, marketing, and social media should feel like a craft-a-thon with your best friends. Rather than being filled with fear. Or worrying that you’re doing it the ‘wrong way’.

Business-crafting should be as much fun as anything else we do. And I don’t know about you, but I love to feel like I can be crafty & get paid for it :)

So think about this…

What if we lived in a world where we…

No longer said: I’m building my business. And instead said: I’m developing my craft.

What if we lived in a world where we…

No longer said: I’m working today. And instead said: I’m crafting today.

What if we lived in a world where we…

No longer said: I’m developing my business strategies. And instead said: I’m mastering my business-crafting abilities.

And what if we took our newfound craftiness and focused our energy on having fun, embracing creativity & developing new ideas that move the planet forward?

You know what would happen then?

We’d no longer move through the world in a way that felt wrong or was at odds with the Universe’s plan for us.

Because you know what? The Universe doesn’t care about the right way or the wrong way to do business.

In fact, the Universe has never taken a business course. It’s not transactional. It’s experiential, transformational, and relationship-oriented. And the Universe loves it when we craft along WITH it.
